Swampscott Dory

The Swampscott Dory is considered to be the Aristocrat of the Dory Family. Suggested reading on this design and the Dory family in general is "The Dory Book" written by John Gardner.

We will offer this wonderful design in our program this fall. Paul Silva from Stamford Ct. joined our program and built this Swampscott Dory. What a magnificent job! When completely finished and rigged this boat will have a value of well over $20,000.00.

This design will require lofting. This is an essential skill required in building hulls of a complex shape. It is not hard, I will show you how to loft the boat, pick up the molds from the lofting and make the structural framing needed to build this boat. It is a lot of fun and very interesting. Once this process is learned you will have the skills required to build most any design. There will be needed additional skills depending on the hull configuration and there are many resources available. Recommended reading on lofting would be either Howard Chapelles book on Boatbuilding or Alan Vaites recently re-issued text on the subject.

Here are some photos of Paul Silvas Swampscott Dory built in our program.

The photo's speak for themselves.
